Questions over Mueller probe after Trump fires Sessions

Hundreds of people plan to rally at the Capitol in downtown Sacramento on Thursday afternoon to show support for the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, part of a nationwide protest after the Wednesday ouster of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions by President Donald Trump.

Jeff Sessions imminent departure as attorney general was expected, as he had been repeatedly criticized by Trump for recusing himself from the investigation of potential collusion between the president's campaign and Russian Federation.

Other speakers said Trump thought American voices would be silent after the midterm election and accused the president of attacking the rule of law. Winning confirmation in the Senate may become easier because Republicans gained seats in Tuesday's midterm elections.

"It is imperative that the administration not impede the Mueller investigation", she said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has been overseeing the Mueller investigation since Sessions recused himself from the investigation previous year due of his involvement in Trump's campaign.

In this April 24, 2014, file photo, then-Iowa Republican senatorial candidate and former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker watches before a live televised debate in Johnston, Iowa.

Trump abruptly altered the chain of command above Mueller on Wednesday, putting his work under the supervision of a Republican loyalist who has been openly skeptical of the special counsel's authority and has mused about ways to curtail his power. One of those offices, in NY, is leading an investigation involving the president's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and hush money payments Cohen says he made to two women who say they had sex with Trump.

As part of Whitaker's new role as the head official at the Justice Department, he will oversee the Russian Federation probe and the agency's other federal investigations, including the NY prosecutors' look into the finances of Trump and his former aides.

Mueller declined to comment, according to his spokesman, Peter Carr. He added that it had "been a privilege" to work under Sessions.

White House emphasizes continuity and not disruption with Sessions' resignation.

"It should end because it's very bad for our country", he said.

Despite Trump's criticism of the probe as a "witch-hunt", Sessions and Rosenstein both defended Mueller's integrity.

On Wednesday, Goodlatte issued a statement praising Sessions' service as attorney general and wishing Whitaker well in his new role. He'd attempted a run for Senate in 2014, but lost to Republican Joni Ernst.

In an op-ed Whitaker wrote a year ago, he argued that "any investigation into President Trump's finances or the finances of his family would require Mueller to return to Rod Rosenstein for additional authority under Mueller's appointment as special counsel".

"Acting AG Whitaker's hostility to the Special Counsel's investigation disqualifies him from overseeing Robert Mueller", Healey tweeted. "This is a break-the-glass moment", he said.

On Thursday, Nadler called on current Judiciary Chairman Rep.

"I thought we had made progress", Wilson said.

"But I think any president should be given a lot of latitude on picking his own team", McConnell said.

Trump saw the move as a betrayal and frequently and publicly criticised Sessions for making the decision to recuse himself. After Pawlenty's bid fizzled, he served in the 2012 and 2016 presidential campaigns of Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who is now energy secretary.

The crowd in New York City's Times Square chanted "Hands off Mueller" and waved various anti-Trump signs.

The special counsel has also been investigating whether Mr Comey's firing amounted to obstruction of justice.

Any action by Whitaker could potentially be challenged under the Vacancies Reform Act Trump used to appoint his acting attorney general. In August 2017, he wrote a piece for CNN in which he stated that looking into Mr Trump's personal finances, or those of his family, "goes beyond the scope of the appointment of the special counsel".

How many people will show up remains to be seen.

Sessions clashed, though, with Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and senior adviser, resisting his proposals to overhaul the criminal justice system and standing by his hard-line approach to imprisonment and sentencing.
