Rebel Wilson loses bid to keep most of defamation payout

Actress Rebel Wilson lost a bid to keep most of her defamation payout

But Wilson, who attended the brief High Court hearing in Canberra on Friday, is proud she took her fight as far as she could.

She added: 'The damages that I did receive are still so significant, so close to the Australian record, and I'm so proud of myself for seeing it through.

Rebel Wilson's day in court was far from pitch flawless when the Australian star was denied a leave to appeal an earlier decision that reversed her winning defamation case against Bauer Media, with a jury awarding her $4.7 million (in Canadian dollars).

The court awarded her millions in aggravated damages - Australia's highest defamation payout - after ruling she had lost out on film roles due to the articles.

The actress had sued Woman's Day magazine previous year over a series of articles in 2015 that she said had painted her as someone who'd lied about her real name, age and childhood in order to make it in Hollywood.

Wilson was originally awarded $4.5m last September, but the case turned against the actress in June 2018 when the court slashed the damages awarded to $600,000 after the Court of Appeal found they had been wrongly awarded.

"What the court of appeal did was not confine itself to the facts found by the trial judge", he told the High Court. "At the end of the day that's what matters", she said.

Within a month, Wilson's lawyers sought special leave to appeal against that decision, arguing the court made several errors.

"In our opinion there are insufficient prospects that an appeal will succeed", Justice Virginia Bell said. "Bauer Media were proven to have told awful lies which were very hurtful".

'I have moved on, personally and professionally, and it's great now that it has all come to a definite end, ' she said.

"The jury obviously restored my reputation".

She said while her appeal was unsuccessful, the whole point was "to stand up to stand up to a bully".
