Runaway mining train travels 90 kilometres without driver in Australia

Mining giant BHP which owns the four-locomotive train decided to derail before it reached the town of Port Hedland near its Western Australia Pilbara site and flicked the points

The train was made up of four locomotives and 268 wagons.

Freight rates for shipping iron ore from Australia to China have dropped by more than 10% since Monday as the derailment of one of BHP's trains is disrupting shipments from Port Hedland.

The train travelled for 90 km by itself before being derailed near Turner, approximately 120km south of Port Hedland, leaving about 1.5km of track damaged.

BHP said yesterday it planned to use its stockpile reserves at the port in order to maintain supply over the coming days.

In July rival mining giant Rio Tinto clocked up a world first when its maiden driverless train voyage carried 28,000 tonnes of iron ore 280 kilometres from its Mount Tom Price mine to a WA port.

BHP said recovering the train and fixing the track - a key access route for the enormous mining facility - will take around a week.

BHP Billiton said it had suspended all its iron ore rail operations in Western Australia on Monday after the incident. "We've got no reason why we have to change the contracts and agreements we have with existing customers", he said, following the company' annual general meeting in Adelaide.

Separate investigations into the train derailment are being conducted by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and BHP.

BHP's shares were trading 1.21 percent lower at AUD 33.14 in Sydney Wednesday amid reports in Britain that the Anglo-Australian firm was facing a GBP 5 billion (USD 6.5 billion) lawsuit over the deadly Samarco dam failure in Brazil in 2015.

Nineteen people were killed and a wave of toxic waste was unleashed when an dam burst at the mine in one of Brazil's worst environmental disasters.
