Trump erroneously accuses French President Emmanuel Macron of ‘very insulting’ comments

French President Emmanuel Macron chairs a cabinet meeting in Charleville-Mezieres northeastern France Wednesday Nov.7 2018

Debating whether the United Kingdom should continue to defend its Western European allies, as it did throughout the 20 century, or take a more detached position, RT Howard in the Daily Telegraph argues "there is one compelling reason why our strategic ties with Western Europe now deserve to be closer than ever before". Since the beginning of his term, Trump has been urging US NATO allies in Europe to up their defense spending.

"Very insulting", he added, "but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which the USA subsidizes greatly!"

Mr Macron said: "We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the US".

Trump's talks with Macron at Elysee Palace are likely to cover European concerns about Trump's plans to withdraw the United States from the 1980s Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Agreement and U.S. renewal of sanctions against Iran.

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, said on Friday in Paris that the USA was concerned about stability in Europe and that Trump was not shirking from global engagement.

Macron also suggested that since the start of Trump's presidency, the U.S. has been seen as a less reliable ally. European leaders say maintaining trade ties is essential to keep Iran from exiting the deal and restarting development of nuclear weapons.

Trump will see Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the first time since their summit earlier this year in Helsinki, though White House officials downplayed the encounter, saying Trump doesn't plan extensive talks with Putin over a weekend that mostly will be devoted to ceremonies. Early on, Macron tried to position himself as a sort of "Trump whisperer" and Mr. Trump returned the favor, hosting Macron at the first and only state dinner of his presidency. But the relationship-building failed to persuade Mr. Trump to remain in the global climate change or Iran deals and did nothing to protect France from USA tariffs.

The dividends of Macron's cultivation of Mr. Trump are "modest at best", said Stewart M. Patrick, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. The pair are expected to meet during the G-20 meeting later this month in Argentina, and the White House has invited Putin to visit Washington.

Emmanuel Macron's relationship building with Donald Trump hasn't got him very far.

"He's starting to become the antithesis of President Trump's public messaging", said Heather Conley, director of the Europe program at Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has embarked on a three-day visit to France on Friday.
