Trump lists Republicans who didn't want his "embrace", lost in midterm elections

Voters cast their ballots in the midterm elections on Nov. 6 2018 in Appleton Wisconsin

Democratic candidates had won or were leading in a net dozen or so House of Representative seats held by the Republicans by about 8:30 p.m., apparently on target for gaining the 23 extra districts needed to seize a majority in the House.

Two 29-year-old Democrats - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Abby Finkenauer - are due to be the youngest women ever to win House seats. Wallace also suggested Ingraham was being hypocritical, saying that if she gives Republicans credit for keeping the Senate, she must also give the Democrats credit for flipping the House. So this was a five-point decline from what was already a low 2016 number.

Not so long ago, the media consensus was that the Democrats would ride a "wave" akin to the Republican routs in 1994 and 2010.

Democrats themselves sought to root their campaigns in more bread-and-butter issues, such as health-care and what they portrayed as Republican assaults on the popular aspects of Obamacare. The parties of first-term presidents tend to lose seats in both chambers in the first midterm elections.

The Republican Senate candidate was also leading in Arizona while Democrats picked up a Republican Senate seat in Nevada. They included New Jersey Sen.

After two years of being blocked by the White House and the Trump Organisation at every turn, Democrats hope the new year brings a new day on such issues as foreign government spending at Trump properties, Trump's foreign licensing deals, Trump administration ties to lobbyists and special interests, and spending by Trump's charitable foundation. Republicans lost seats in the House after focusing on impeachment in 1998.

Among the new lawmakers headed to the House is Jennifer Wexton, a Virginia state senator who defeated incumbent Barbara Comstock in one of the most closely watched races across the country.

In Florida, six House seats are in play, and there are close and crucial battles for a Senate seat and the governorship.

The vote was seen as a referendum on the president, even though he is not up for re-election till 2020.

New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo - sometimes spoken of as a 2020 presidential contender - cruised to a third term.

The U.S. political balance appeared set to shift Tuesday as early results came in from a momentous midterm election seen as a watershed moment in the tumultuous Donald Trump presidency. Among those expected: Vice-President Mike Pence and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal adviser to the president.

His take-no-prisoners approach troubled many Republicans seeking to appeal to moderate voters in suburban House districts, but Trump prioritised base voters in the deep-red states that could determine the fate of the Senate.

"Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans". In Maine, voters elected Democratic gubernatorial candidate Janet Mills after the outgoing Republican Gov. Paul LePage blocked a legislatively approved expansion for a year.

Women voted considerably more in favour of their congressional Democratic candidate - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for the Republican, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 113,000 voters and about 20,000 nonvoters - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago.

In suburban areas where key House races will be decided, voters skewed significantly toward Democrats by a almost 10-point margin. Voters scored Trump positively on the economy and for standing up "for what he believes in". Democratic Senate incumbents were up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri - states Trump carried by nearly 25 percentage points on average two years ago.

Record diversity on the ballot may have helped drive turnout.

A Democrat-controlled House was expected to pursue anti-corruption and voter-rights legislation, and hold multiple investigations on controversial aspects of the Trump administration, not least being allegations of collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russian Federation.

Ayanna Pressley was elected as Massachusetts' first black congresswoman.

Voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, shattering the record of 84 now.
