Trump threatens to pull more reporters' credentials

US President Donald Trump points to journalist Jim Acosta from CNN during a post-election press conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington DC

After CNN reporter Abby Phillip asked Trump whether he wants newly appointed Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to "rein in" Special Counsel Robert Mueller-an idea Whitaker has repeatedly endorsed-the president called the question "stupid" and fumed that Phillip asks "a lot of stupid questions".

Trump kept his answers short, taking shots at Acosta several times before moving to end the questioning.

McCain said that she doesn't believe it was an assault against the White House intern, but she thinks Acosta was "grandstanding". The CNN reporter has made a name for himself by asking combative questions of Trump and other administration officials.

"Give me a break", Trump said, adding that the clip only showed a close-up of the intern grabbing the microphone.

"Skilled journalists know that you can be persistent without being disrespectful".

The New York Times also noted that Acosta's monologues have led "some of his rival White House reporters" to roll their eyes.

In between his calls for "respect", Trump called Acosta "unprofessional" and disparaged the reporter's intelligence.

He continued, "When you're in the White House, this is a very sacred place to me".

"President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration", Sanders wrote in a series of tweets. Other outlets and reporters in the room deserve opportunities to ask their questions too.

More importantly, self-aggrandizing harangues that turn the reporter into the story are not a legitimate form of journalism.

"The question is: did the reporter make contact or not?"

Despite losing his White House pass, and the ability to travel with Trump and the rest of the press corps on Air Force One, Acosta went to Paris to cover Trump's meeting with world leaders this weekend. What it does mean is that Acosta isn't even a practitioner of true journalism, let alone a martyr to its cause.

On the intern question, yes he definitely did touch her with his left hand as he tried to hold onto the mic. The reporter was in the midst of a terse back-and-forth with Trump, whom he was trying to ask a question about a migrant caravan heading for the U.S.

After Friday morning's Q&A session, Ryan called into CNN and said she shook off his insults.

It's a dead-giveaway: each man is playing to his audience.

"He knew it would cause a problem and it would make a story", Huntsman said, as Behar tried to switch the discussion back to Trump.

US President Donald Trump isn't new to fights with journalists. But the network should tread carefully. Her work has been featured on Fox News, the Drudge Report, HotAir.com, RealClearDefense, RealClearPolitics, and elsewhere.
