U.S. reimposes tough curbs on Iran, Tehran hits at bullying

New U.S. Sanctions Against Iran Go Into Effect

The Trump administration is providing waivers to eight countries, allowing them to continue to import oil from Iran, which Pompeo said was necessary "to ensure a well-supplied oil market".

As NPR's Colin Dwyer reported recently, "Since May, when President Trump vowed to unilaterally pull the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, his administration has telegraphed its intentions to restore the sanctions that had been lifted as part of the pact". Right now we have a history last time around of India, Turkey and China continuing to buy even with sanctions. Among those are 50 Iranian banks and subsidiaries, more than 200 people and ships, Iran's state-run airline Iran Air and more than 65 of its planes.

Hua says: "We regret this decision by the U.S". "Today the United States is executing on the final actions to withdraw from the Obama administration's fatally flawed Iran deal", Mr Mnuchin said.

"We have to make the Americans understand that they must not use the language of force, pressure and threats to speak to the great Iranian nation - they must be punished once and for all", President Hassan Rouhani told a Cabinet meeting in the Iranian capital.

Seeking to deflect criticism from some Iran hawks concerned that the sanctions don't go far enough, Pompeo stressed that United States pressure on countries to stop buying Iranian oil had already reduced its exports by more than a million barrels of crude per day costing the country $2.5 billion revenue.

Turkey is one of the key destinations for Iranian crude, accounting for more than a quarter of Turkey's daily average imports of around 830,000 barrels, according to data from the market regulator. He said the pressure "is only going to mount from here" unless Iran's leaders halt its support for terrorism and abandon its nuclear ambitions "immediately".

In a statement issued over the weekend, the Kremlin's foreign ministry "strongly condemned" the new wave of US sanctions, arguing that the move deals "another powerful blow to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT)".

His remarks provide an insight into Iran's diplomatic response based on an effort to isolate the U.S. by driving a wedge between it and European countries. The Administration has granted waivers to eight countries that have reduced their oil purchases from Iran but not stopped them entirely. "We'll see fallouts of a statement to be made today", Oktay was quoted as saying by the Anadolu Agency (AA). Over the a year ago, the exchange value of Iran's currency has dropped sharply against the US dollar.

Iranian army general Habibillah Sayyari said both the national army and the country's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard are taking part in the exercise.

Iran's clerical rulers have dismissed concerns about the impact of sanctions on the economy.

Alamolhoda, an influential figure on the government's Assembly of Experts, told his followers that Iran would launch a missile attack against "all Persian Gulf countries" in the event its oil markets are curtailed.

"This is an economic war against Iran. We must resist and win", he said.

"The Americans never really committed to the deal and the Iranian government did not spend the cash it got from the deal on the people".

"Permitting these specific activities to continue is an interim measure that preserves oversight of Iran's civil nuclear program", according to the statement, which has sparked fierce pushback from Iran hawks.

"Any financial institution, company, or individual who evades our sanctions risks losing access to the U.S. financial system and the ability to do business with the United States or USA companies", Mnuchin said.

There was no immediate statement from the Ministry of External Affairs but sources in New Delhi said this was the result of hectic negotiations over the last six months with United States officials.

The sanctions are created to push Iran's exports to zero.
