'Umbrellas Are Hard:' Trump Shamed Over Skipping WWI Cemetery Visit in France

Trump Faces Backlash Over Skipping WW1 Cemetery For Fallen US Soldiers

The news provoked a flood of comments online, most of which were meant to rebuke the current "pathetic" "White House occupant", whereas others butted in with more light-hearted remarks, calling attention to Trump's earlier reported "inability" to operate umbrellas.

US President Donald Trump could not attend a commemoration in France for US soldiers and marines killed during World War I on Saturday because of the rain, the White House said.

"(Their attendance) has been canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather", the White House said in a statement, adding that a delegation lead by Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired general, went instead.

The swipe came after Mr Trump was accused of being a "coward" and "snowflake" for cancelling an appearance at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau on Saturday because of rain.

The president spent much of Saturday at the USA ambassador's residence following a meeting and lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron.

US President Donald Trump has been labelled a "pathetic, inadequete" for pulling out of a Remembrance Day event.

Trump was scheduled to join dozens of world leaders on Sunday at a ceremony in the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe marking Armistice Day.

Trump hailed the end of "one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history" in a speech Sunday at the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial. She also noted that the trip to Aisne-Marne was 2.5 hours by vehicle.

The cancellation of Saturday's visit drew criticism from those who say the president should have found a way to travel to Aisne-Marne regardless of the weather.

Other world leaders also gathering in Paris braved the drops to pay respect at respective military cemeteries in the region.

He cancelled a visit to a United States military cemetery, but the White House said other senior officials went instead.

The former campaign adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron, Francois Heisbourg, posted a photo outside his window giving a peek at the weather conditions that kept President Trump indoors.
