UN Security Council to meet on Gaza violence

An Israeli woman inspects the damage in an apartment that was hit by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip in the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon

Ahead of a Security Council debate on the latest violence, triggered by the volley of Hamas rockets fired into southern Israel in recent days, Ambassador Danny Danon declared: "Every time Hamas shoots a rocket - children at school, adults at work, families all over the country hear this".

The exchanges that followed were the fiercest since the Gaza war in 2014, the third between Israel and Hamas in a decade as part of the wider Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Israel and Egypt immediately imposed a blockade on Gaza to contain Hamas.

A Palestinian labourer from the occupied West Bank was killed when a rocket hit a building in the Israeli city of Ashkelon.

UNITED NATIONS, United States: The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors later Tuesday to discuss the escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip, the worst flareup since the 2014 war.

The fighting began on Sunday when Palestinians found an Israeli intelligence operation inside Gaza.

KHAN YUNIS, GAZA - NOVEMBER 12: Funeral ceremony for seven Palestinians, including a military commander of Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas movement, held after they were killed in Israeli attack in Khan Yunis, Gaza on November 12, 2018.

Earlier hundreds of people demonstrated at the entrance to the town of Sderot over Israel's reported agreement for a ceasefire with Gaza's Hamas terrorist rulers, after a 25-hour period that saw over 460 rockets fired at Israeli communities near the Palestinian enclave. A soldier was severely wounded in the attack. Previous reports said that the security cabinet has ordered the military to continue strikes in Gaza "as is necessary". "This is a message to Israel", said Abu Zuhri. But it did not address the deeper issues that pushed Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers toward their latest violence and left doubts about global efforts to forge a broader truce agreement. Seven Palestinians, including five militants, were killed, and 26 people were wounded.

The escalation came despite Netanyahu's decision to allow Qatar to transfer millions of dollars in aid to the Gaza Strip for salaries as well as fuel to ease an electricity shortage.

Hamas, in turn, had scaled back its mass protests that have led to weekly bloodshed along the Israeli border.

The standoff has produced repeated rounds of violence, including indiscriminate Gaza rocket fire at Israeli towns and cities and punishing Israeli military offensives, but Hamas remains firmly in control.

Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza have fought three wars since 2008, and protests and clashes along the Gaza border since March 30 have repeatedly raised fears of a fourth.

The goal wasn't just to target Israeli soldiers, but to murder civilians.
