United States voters give verdict on Trump as control of Congress at stake

US Elections: Referendum on Trump’s presidency? - Rabobank

Tuesday's elections also tested the strength of a Trump-era political realignment defined by evolving divisions among voters by race, gender, and especially education.

Fox News can now project that the Democratic Party will retake control of the United States House of Representatives.

Over the prior five congressional midterms, Republicans spent slightly more than Democrats in each cycle.

After knocking off a couple of Democratic incumbents so far, Republicans could not only defend but potentially increase their 51-seat majority as additional races are called throughout the night. "It's just a question of the size of victory".

"All seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate are up for grab".

With memories still fresh from 2016, when Trump astonished experts by defeating the heavily favoured Hillary Clinton, pollsters are being cautious.

Democratic candidate for governor Michelle Lujan Grisham greets diners at Barelas Coffee House on midterm elections day in Albuquerque, N.M., November 6, 2018.

At a polling station in Arlington, Virginia, head election officer William Harkins said: "it's a very good turnout".

"If the radical Democrats take power they will take a wrecking ball to our economy and our future", Trump declared in Cleveland, using the same heated rhetoric that has defined much of his presidency.

Voting in Chicago, James Gerlock, 27, a Republican, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

"An American voter is not happy with one party being in charge", he said. Individual races "will be close", she said, but because of the "quality of our candidates" and emphasis on preserving health care, "I feel confident we will win".

Trump was spending Election Day at the White House and tweeting support for Republicans in the toughest races.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Sherrod Brown of OH easily won re-election as they consider bids for the Democratic presidential nomination. In the last FEC filing for the October 1 through 17 pre-election period, Democrats raised $126 million to the Republicans' $82.5 million.

Breaking the super majority in just one chamber would change the power dynamic in Raleigh.

Arizona Senate candidate Rep. Martha McSally (R) explained, "That will come to a screeching halt if the majority flips, and that's why this race is so important".

South Florida voters cast their ballots at a polling center in Miami, Florida on November 6, 2018.

President Trump claimed Monday he is not concerned about House Democrats obtaining and releasing his tax returns if they win the House majority in Tuesday's midterm elections.

Carlos Gallinar, an El Paso resident, said he planned to vote for O'Rourke because of "the negative energy coming out of Washington and this president".

Other states worth watching include: Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and even New Jersey. Gallup pollster Frank Newport said that trend put pressure on Democrats to make sure their supporters got out and voted. "Today, we say enough".

A record number of women appeared headed to Congress as polls closed Tuesday.

Most Democratic candidates in tight races stayed away from harsh criticism of Trump during the campaign's final stretch, focusing instead on bread-and-butter issues like keeping down health care costs, maintaining insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare health care programs for senior citizens.

Rep. John Katko, R-N.Y., left, speaks to the media after voting in Camillus, N.Y., November 6, 2018.
