What we know about the gunman in the Thousand Oaks bar shooting

At least eleven wounded in shooting at bar in southern California

The carnage added Thousand Oaks to the seemingly endless list of American cities at which a mass shooting has occurred.

This is a breaking news report. 'They broke the window'.

On Thursday, authorities provided an update on the shooting. Law enforcement and emergency crews were flooding the scene.

After a lull of about 15 minutes, more officers went inside and found the suspected gunman dead of a gunshot wound. It's unclear whether the magazine was legally purchased.

Only 10 days ago a gunman killed 11 worshipers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

The incident happened at the Borderline Bar and Grill in the town of Thousand Oaks, a quiet, upscale residential suburb of Los Angeles.

Helus was a 29-year veteran of the force with a wife and grown son and planned to retire in the coming year, said the sheriff, who choked back tears several times as he talked about a man who was also his longtime friend.

"I saw the shots go off, although I didn't really see the guy", she said.

He could not immediately provide information on the extent of the victims' injuries. According to the bar's website, a "College Country" night was going on at the time of the shooting. Once safely outside, the uninjured hugged and awaited word about those still inside.

About two dozen parents waited nearby early Thursday morning for news of their children. A reporter spoke to a man who had not heard from his son.

"Bar stools go through windows", he told ABC.

The identity of the gunman is allegedly 28-year-old David Ian Long, a military veteran who apparently drove his mother's vehicle to the scene.

Daniel Manrique was a native of Thousand Oaks and had served in Afghanistan with the Marine Corps, Task and goal reported. He and his wife separated in June 2011, while he was deployed on a seven-month tour in Afghanistan. Don MacLeod said he did not call police but avoided speaking with Ian Long. Dean told reporters that there was no indication the suspect was targeting bar employees.

Ventura county sheriff Geoff Dean said sheriff's deputies were called to Long's home in Newbury Park, five miles west of Thousand Oaks, in April 2018.

The police called in a team of mental health specialists who decided that Long did not qualify to be involuntarily detained for mental health evaluation under state law.

President Trump wrote on Twitter that he has been "fully briefed on the bad shooting in California".

"Great bravery shown by police". Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer were the first to arrive at the bar and went inside just before 11:30 p.m. PST (0730 GMT).

A police officer, described as a sheriff's sergeant, and the gunman are among the 13 confirmed to have died.
