White House suspends credentials for CNN's Jim Acosta

John Legend slams Trump during President's wild press conference

Following a lengthy and tense verbal back-and-forth, in which Trump at one point started to stray from his lectern and he called Acosta "a rude, awful person", a female White House intern tried to take the microphone from Acosta.

The statement from Sanders said "we will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern". McCain agreed that Acosta didn't commit assault against the White House staffer, but criticized his "grandstanding" and said it was wholly inappropriate for him to push her arm away.

Acosta said the accusations from Sanders were a lie.

The dramatic White House expulsion of Attorney General Jeff Sessions may be getting all the attention, but there was another one that some consider just as important: the banning of journalist Jim Acosta.

The post-midterm election news conference marked a new low in the president's relationship with journalists. He doesn't like that there are some white nationalists who are supporting the president.

"Not you. Your organisation is bad", Trump said.

An association representing the Washington press corps urged the White House to immediately reverse "this weak and misguided action".

"Just sit down", Trump said. Acosta chose to ask Trump why he seemingly "demonized" the immigrants traveling to the American border at the moment.

Acosta accused the president of attempting to frighten voters ahead of the midterms with ads depicting the migrant caravan as invaders.

Trump responded: "CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You shouldn't be working for CNN".

"Mr. President, I have one other question on the Russian Federation investigation". You are a rude awful person. "Jim Acosta has our full support", CNN said.

'The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is awful, ' he said. "You shouldn't treat people that way". "You shouldn't treat people like that".

Mason, a Reuters correspondent, also came forward in defence of his CNN colleague.

When asked if it began with him, the president replied: "I do have the right to fight back". "He's a diligent reporter who busts his butt like the rest of us". Trump told Acosta that he should "let me run the country" and Acosta should "run CNN".

Journalists may use a range of approaches to carry out their jobs and the WHCA does not police the tone or frequency of the questions its members ask of powerful senior government officials, including the President.

He moved to another reporter, but Acosta refused to turn over the microphone.

"That's enough. That's enough", Trump said.
