WHO Replies Zimbabwean Preacher Who Claimed To Have Cure For HIV

Dep Minister Mutodi

Yesterday members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police accompanied by the dreaded Central Intelligence agents raided Magaya's Offices in search of his HIV and Cancer cure.

A court has heard of a desperate scramble to destroy evidence before police swooped on Walter Magaya's office in Harare to seize unlicenced medicines he meant to sell as an HIV cure. He will be back in court on November 29.

It is the State's case that on October 31 this year, Magaya allegedly made an advertisement on Yadah TV of Aguma medicine which he claimed to be a cure for HIV, cancer and other incurable ailments.

Verifications were made through Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe on their records and it was established that Aguma is not a registered medicine or drug in Zimbabwe.

The raid comes after prophet Magaya during this week's Sunday service announced to his congregation that he had discovered a cure for Aids. "Government will carry out its own research and is summoning a local research board to bring in people who are HIV positive and take statistics on people taking Aguma".

"I spoke before I looked into authorities regulations".

Magaya appeared briefly before the Harare magistrates court before he was released on $300 bail, the report said.

In a letter to Magaya, ZADHR chairperson Brighton Chizhande told the cleric that his actions are in contravention of the Medicines and Allied Substance Act (Section15:03) and Part 3, Section 32 of the Public Health Act.

World Health Organization representative in the country, Dr Alex Gasaira, explicity said "there is no cure for HIV infection".

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reaffirmed that there is "no cure" for HIV, even as it urged people living with HIV/AIDS to continue with Anti-Retroviral (ARV) therapy to manage their infections. The country has been making strides in its fight against HIV/Aids despite the current economic turmoil which health experts say has hit the operations of most of the country's major hospitals, including the procurement of essential drugs for people living with the pandemic.
