WHO Report Finds Large Gap In Global Antibiotic Use

WHO warns 'urgent action' is needed to tackle global misuse of antibiotics

The event is implemented within the framework of global initiative of WHO, FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Regional Representation for Central Asia for WAAW 2018.

Painting the numerous health risks associated with the high antibiotics resistance rate in the country, Rev. Awitty pointed out that "it is now becoming hard to treat minor infections like tuberculosis even with the combination of four different drugs".

Discovered in the 1920s, antibiotics saved tens of millions of lives by effectively fighting those diseases triggered by bacteria, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and meningitis, among others. Antibiotics for therapeutic uses in animals are classed by MPI as restricted veterinary medicines and need a veterinary prescription before use.

In Gibraltar, the Gibraltar Health Authority said it had noted the findings of the study. Some countries, such as Burkina Faso, have expanded their surveillance systems to include data from health care facilities.

Data presented in this first report varies widely in quality and completeness.

The WHO has warned many times that the world was going to lack of effective antibiotics and in the past year, the specialized agency of the United Nations has asked the States and the major pharmaceutical groups to create a new generation of drugs capable of combating "superbugs" ultra-resistant. Sixteen of these countries have contributed to this first report and many more are expected to contribute to the global data in the next few years.

The bacteria may become resistant when patients use antibiotics which they do not need, or do not complete their treatment, thus giving the bacteria a chance to survive and develop immunity. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs created to kill them.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu in a speech read on his behalf expressed confidence the country was on the path to containing the phenomenon of AMR with the policy on "Antimicrobial Use and Resistance and the corresponding National Action Plan (NAP), modelled after the Global Action Plan developed in one health". Accounting for less than 2% of total antibiotic consumption in most high-income countries and not being reported by most low- and middle-income countries.

According to WHO, the 2018 World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) campaign seeks to provide greater flexibility to regions and countries to reflect their unique priorities, target specific levels of awareness and their specific audiences. Resistance can occur when people cannot afford a full course of treatment or only have access to substandard or falsified medicines. In many countries, the lack of access to quality assured antibiotics drives people to buy antibiotics without a prescription on the informal market, which is not now captured by the surveillance system.

Antibiotic use in animal agriculture comes under quite a bit of scrutiny with critics arguing that ranchers should be decreasing the use of antibiotics in beef production.
