Yankees re-sign CC Sabathia to 1-year deal

Yankees reportedly looking to add two starting pitchers

CC Sabathia was a little indecisive last season.

He is 246-153 in 18 major league seasons with a 3.70 ERA and 2,986 strikeouts, including 129-80 in a decade with the Yankees.

NY finished with a rotation of right-handers Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and Lance Lynn along with left-handers Sabathia and Happ. A right-hander who turns 29 this week, Gray bristled at the rough reception by Yankees fans.

General manager Brian Cashman admitted Tuesday at baseball's general manager meetings that he was trying to keep Sabathia in the fold. He previously played for the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers. He missed a $500,000 performance bonus by two innings when he was ejected in his last regular-season start for hitting Tampa Bay's Jesus Sucre after Rays pitcher Andrew Kittredge threw up-and-in to Austin Romine.

Needless to say, Cashman and Co. recognize that starting pitching is a major need fresh off a 100-win season that saw NY put up historic numbers on offense.

"He's been a great Yankee, and he has time on the clock still", Cashman said.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, the team is seeking two new starters in either free agency or the trade market. "I think the hunger and the effort, the passion's there, despite the awful outcome that took place in the World Series this year".

Cashman repeated he intends to trade pitcher Sonny Gray, just 15-16 since NY acquired him from Oakland in July 2017. The Yankees are expected to look for more pitching options in the offseason.

It was an easy reunion for the Yankees and their big lefty, who made it clear on the eve of the team's Game 4 loss in the ALDS that NY was where he wanted to be.
