Amazon Is Launching A Game-Streaming Service, Report Says

Report: Amazon is developing its own game streaming service

Amazon is developing its own Netflix-like video game streaming service, sources claim, pitting it against Sony, Microsoft, and other companies offering or developing similar platforms.

According to a report by The Information [Paywall], the plans are already in motion, with Amazon reportedly now negotiating with game publishers to be able to distribute their titles through its service.

This isn't game streaming like say, Twitch.

With Amazon massive cloud infrastructure, it could be the firm to really push game streaming alongside the likes of Microsoft, which has its Azure cloud.

Cloud gaming allows users to play games without needing to download big files, because the game is run on the cloud rather than a user's gaming platform.

Google is also in on the game streaming game with Project Stream, which it tested a year ago by streaming Assassin's Creed Odyssey through the Chrome browser, and it has plans to further develop the service with the use of the latest graphics cards from AMD.

Unsurprisingly, Amazon wants to get in on the game streaming business early, which is seen by many as the future of the video games industry.

As streaming requires significantly less processing power than running games locally, titles could stream to Amazon's Fire TV hardware, as well as smartphones and tablets.

Following up on the rumour, The Verge spotted two job openings listed by Amazon for engineers in Seattle, both specifying they'd be working on "Cloud Games".
