Aussie man deported from New Zealand over airplane bomb threat

An Air New Zealand flight was cancelled after a Sydney teenager made a false bomb threat on board

A passenger was removed from Air New Zealand flight 711 to Australia around 8:45pm after making threatening comments.

The plane returned to the gate and the man was arrested.

He has been charged with breaching the Civil Aviation Act and will appear in Manukau District Court today.

In the end, Fifita was ordered by the court to pay $US3,000 ($4,173) in reparations for the cost of the scare on taxpayers, emergency services, and the airport.

The plane was on the runway at Auckland International Airport and about to take off for Sydney at the time when Mr Fifita posted the message because he thought it was "funny".

Fifita's lawyer, Jane Northwood, labelled the incident as the "grossly stupid event of the century" but said her client was distressed about what he had done.

Fifita was arrested on Wednesday night and a court on Thursday heard he wrote the message because he considered it amusing, reported.

This is the second time Air New Zealand has hit the worldwide headlines recently.

A passenger on Fifita's flight previously told Stuff they were given food vouchers and put up in hotels for the night.
