Black boxes integral to air crash probes

Indonesia finds Lion Air jet cockpit voice recorder

Contact with flight JT610 was lost 13 minutes after it took off on October 29 from the capital Jakarta heading north to the tin-mining town of Pangkal Pinang.

The pilot had asked air traffic control for permission to turn back to the airport but lost contact soon after the request.

Authorities called off the grim task of identifying victims of the crash in November, with only 125 people named after tests on human remains that filled some 200 body bags.

Ridwan Djamaluddin, a deputy maritime minister, told reporters on Monday that the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) had informed the ministry about the discovery.

Indonesia passenger jet with 189 aboard crashes into ocean shortly after takeoff, October 29, 2018.The recovered cockpit voice recorder of Lion Air flight 610 is kept in a water-filled container on board of Indonesian Navy ship KRI Spica in the waters of Tanjung Karawang, Indonesia, Monday, Jan. 14, 2019.

The device, one of two recorders on the jet, could offer insight into the final moments of the fatal flight as investigators search for clues about why the brand-new Boeing 737 Max 8 went down.

According to the BBC, the voice recorder was found "broken into two pieces".

Susmoro said the voice recorder's signal, created to last 90 days following a crash, would have stopped after about 15 days.

"Even though we don't yet know the contents of the CVR, this is some relief from our despair", he said.

Introduced in the late 1950s, black boxes help explain almost 90% of all crashes, according to aviation experts.

Flight JT610 took off from Jakarta at 06:20 on Monday (23:30 GMT on Sunday).

It emerged there were problems with the air-speed indicator on four of the plane's previous flights.

The anti-stalling system repeatedly forced the plane's nose down, despite efforts by pilots to correct this.

"This will really help the investigation... and could give some more answers on the cause" of the crash, said Jakarta-based aviation analyst Dudi Sudibyo.
