Cover-up of sexual harassment to: shareholders sue Google guide

Google's being sued for paying millions of dollars to former execs accused of sexual harassment

The suit, by shareholder James Martin, stems from revelations past year that the company awarded a $90 million (roughly Rs. 630 crores) exit package to executive Andy Rubin, the creator of the Android operating system, even as Rubin was being pushed out over sexual misconduct.

Google shareholders are suing the company board and senior management for covering up executives' sexual harassment and rewarding them with large payouts for leaving quietly. The complaint was targeted at the company's top executives and committee members, including co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, venture capitalist John Doerr, investor Ram Shriram and Alphabet chief legal officer David Drummond, among others.

In the later part of October previous year, we learned disturbing news about Andy Rubin and other ex-Google executives, thanks to a piece from The New York Times.

Another day, another anti-Google lawsuit - this time over claims Alphabet, adtech monolith Google's holding company, "failed to take meaningful steps to address a pervasive culture of harassment and discrimination". Google had asked for Rubin's resignation in 2014 after determining that allegations that he had coerced a woman into performing oral sex in a hotel room the previous year were credible. "In this way, Alphabet and the Board were able to maintain optics and superficial compliance with its code of conduct, internal rules, and laws regarding sexual harassment".

A lawsuit has been filed by a shareholder of Alphabet Inc. The company has thus far declined to issue a comment as have Rubin and Singhal, who have also denied the allegations.

The suit seeks damages, including the return of more than $90m that was paid to two former executives in severance packages, as well as reforms to Alphabet's corporate governance and share structure. "Andy left Google voluntarily". Singhal also resigned from the position of Uber's Senior Vice President of Engineering in 2017 after the sexual harassment allegations against him were discovered from his time at Google. The aftermath of these incidents becoming public was a massive world protest staged by its employees aginst the way the sexual misconduct cases were handled. "And fallout from the purported scandal led to billions of dollars in losses to Alphabet's value in the stock market, lawyer Frank Bottini said at a press conference in San Francisco".

Attorneys for Martin said they plan to show that Google suffered hundreds of millions of dollars in damages because of the board's actions.
