Facility's CEO resigns after vegetative patient gives birth

Woman in vegetative state for decade reportedly gives birth

The Hacienda HealthCare facility in Pheonix, Ariz., is under fire after one of its patients, who has been in a vegetative state for at least a decade, gave birth on December 29.

It's now alleged the 29-year-old was raped several times and she was impregnated at the facility with male staff members being asked to provide DNA samples, CBS 5 reported.

"A woman living at a Hacienda HealthCare facility in central Phoenix reportedly delivered a baby last month (on December 29)".

"None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth", a source told news outlet AZ Family.

Since the woman, whose name is being withheld, would've been unable to consent to sexual intercourse, Arizona police have launched a sexual-abuse investigation.

Officials with Hacienda Healthcare have issued a statement, amidst mounting controversy over a female patient in vegetative state who gave birth recently.

A spokesman for Hacienda HealthCare says Bill Timmons announced his resignation Monday and it was unanimously accepted by the facility's board of directors.

Hacienda almost lost its Medicare funding in December 2013 after Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) found at least one staff member was abusive to multiple patients while several staff members were deficient in reporting patient allegations of abuse by staff.

"To that end, we are re-evaluating the state's contract and regulatory authority as it relates to this facility and have been working closely with state agencies to ensure all necessary safety measures are in place".

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said he'd been briefed on the situation and called the "reports deeply troubling".

Alejandro Benally, Chief of the San Carlos Apache Police Department said in the press release that "this matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Phoenix Police Department".

"In a statement, board member Gary Orman said: "[We] will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

The woman said staff were told by Mr Timmons not to report the incident to the Department of Child Safety. That employee was later fired.

Martin Solomon, a personal injury attorney in Phoenix whose clients are mostly adult victims of abuse and neglect, said any lawyer representing the woman should call for all pertinent medical records, a list of current and former employees and any past litigation involving Hacienda.

It would be the police who would lead DNA testing to figure out who fathered the baby, Solomon said.

"Whether it's an employee or someone from the outside, the facility has an obligation to protect residents". The caregiver was also incensed at the facility's staff, who she says should have noticed her gaining weight or missing periods. Because he says without saying anything, they're creating distrust in the community, and with no suspect caught, police should want people to know what's going on, and to come forward if they know something.

"We're just trying to get more information".

"From what I've been told she was moaning".

"I wasn't there", Meyers said.
