GM ramps up all-electric Cadillac in possible challenge to Tesla

GM Surges After Surprise Forecast for Annual Profit GainMore

The Cadillac booth displays the company logo at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., January 16, 2018.

This time, GM's luxury brand will go all in with a new fully electric vehicle riding on a new battery-electric vehicle architecture that will eventually be used for other GM models.

The Cadillac-branded vehicle will be the first from GM to ride on the upcoming BEV3 electric platform, which is expected to arrive in 2021.

Last year, GM killed off the plug-in Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac CT6 in order to allocate more funds into the EV sector.

A GM spokesman declined to comment.

The biggest carmaker in the United States two years ago announced EV manufacturing plans that included building a dedicated electric vehicle architecture and launching it by 2021 along with a battery system, with the two to be used to develop at 20 new electric models in both the US and China, the world's largest EV market.

Last month, two OH senators asked GM to commit to building all future electric vehicles for US buyers within the country.

Also in 2017, chief executive Marry Barra said General Motors planned to launch at least 10 new EVs for the Chinese market specifically by 2020. The extra injection into Cadillac should make the brand a leader for electric technology.

Mary Barra, GM's CEO, said this week that the company aims to sell 1 million electric vehicles per year by 2026.

However, there is also a major opportunity for Cadillac here in the United States given the recent strong performance of Tesla.

In October, GM urged the Trump administration to back a nationwide program to boost sales of zero emission vehicles like electric cars, even as the government has proposed ending California's ability to require more clean vehicles.
