Google Assistant Interpreter Mode offers real-time spoken translations

Apple’s CES Ad Hits Google And Amazon Where It Hurts

Google partnered with Lenovo to produce the 4-inch Smart Clock, which comes with a touchscreen that automatically adjusts based on the room's brightness, so that it "gently wakes" users up in the morning.

Unfortunately, the American tech giant has not yet discussed plans to add the feature to the Google Assistant on smartphones.

The concept is similar to Google's Pixel Buds, the $159 ear buds Google launched in 2017 that can provide real-time translations in your ears.

All the while, translations in both languages popped up on the display of its Google Home Hub. Its capabilities are also a little more advanced, as product manager Vincent Lacey explained. Although today's theme was mostly Google Assistant.

It says the service will make it easier for hotel concierge desks to check guests in.

This means for the moment "Interpreter Mode" will only be available on smart speakers and smart displays.

What stood out most to me during my brief demo was just how much Google has been able to simplify the complex task of interpretation.

Google gives the example of a company creating an e-ink display that can project the weather or a calendar, while harnessing the power of Assistant Connect to show you content from your linked smart speaker. While Google and other companies actively participate, Apple has always kept a distance. You know, like an actual interpreter. In the demos I witnessed, there were some stumbles and awkwardness, like mistranslated words and confusion around how conversations should flow when you're using a digital display as your interpreter. More importantly, the experience was good enough that Interpreter Mode actually seems like a viable way to converse with someone you wouldn't otherwise be able to communicate with - at least for everyday conversations. Instead, Google is planning on doing the heavy lifting for them.

Amazon Alexa also got a couple of new smart displays.

The Interpreter mode can be triggered by saying "Hey Google, be my French interpreter" if you want to translate from or to French or replace it with any language you wish.
