Kuchar extends lead at Sony Open

Matt Kuchar shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 to extend his lead in the Sony Open on Saturday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

Kuchar ran off four birdies in five holes for another seven-under 63 to give him a one-shot lead over fellow American Andrew Putnam.

Keith Mitchell had a 63 and was four behind, along with Chez Reavie (66).

Australian golfer Marc Leishman has stormed up the leaderboard to be in a tie for fifth with a second-round 64, but Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth have missed the cut.


Putnam, who played college golf at Pepperdine and claimed his first PGA Tour victory previous year in the Barracuda Championship, capped his 67 with an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole.

"Last year I probably ground harder than I've done in the past", he said.

Putnam pulled even with Kuchar with three birdies in the first five holes.

Kuchar held the halfway lead after a pair of 63s, and he made another positive start to the third round as he rolled in a confident 13-foot putt for an opening birdie before settling for a series of pars. Reavie made more eagles - three - than birdies, of which he had only one.
