Maroon 5 to headline 2019 Super Bowl halftime show

Maroon 5

Maroon 5 has been officially named as the 2019 Super Bowl's halftime show headliner.

Some of the biggest names in music and entertainment have performed at Super Bowl halftime shows over the years, including Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen just to name a few. An online petition urges Maroon 5 to withdraw from the gig.

Some members of the public, as well as various artists, encouraged musicians to refuse requests to perform at the show as a way to condemn the NFL's treatment of Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and activist.

Travis Scott performs at the iHeartRadio Music Festival on September 23, 2017 in Las Vegas. Big Boi, an Atlanta native, is best known for being a part of the hip-hop rap duo Outkast.

Billboard reported that Scott, who reportedly signed on in December, only agreed to perform if the National Football League made a joint donation to an organization fighting for social justice. "I know being an artist that it's in my power to inspire".

A second source involved in the conversations also told ET that the NFL actually approached both Rihanna and Pink - who sang the National Anthem ahead of Super Bowl LII back in February - to perform at halftime early on, but because the negotiations took so long, both women chose to move on.

Jay-Z, Meek Mill and the Reverend Al Sharpton were among the people who sources or reports said criticized or tried to convince Scott to decline the performance.

The announcement, which was also shared by CBS Sports, the network broadcasting the event, comes after rumours began circulating late past year that Maroon 5 would take the stage.
