Mayor of Poland’s Gdansk stabbed on stage during charity event - web portal

Gdansk's Mayor Pawel Adamowicz speaks with people as he collects money for the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity in Gdansk Poland

The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk has been left fighting for his life after being stabbed by a knife-wielding attacker in front of hundreds of people at a charity event.

Pawel Adamowicz was rushed to hospital after being attacked during the fundraiser organised by one of Poland's biggest charities.

President Andrzej Duda said that while he and the mayor have had political differences, "today I am unconditionally with him and his loved ones, just as - I hope - all of us compatriots are".

London mayor Sadiq Khan also sent his best wishes via Twitter, writing: "Shocked to hear of the attack on Paweł Adamowicz, Mayor of Gdańsk, this evening".

According to Sky News, Adamowicz underwent five hours of surgery for injuries to his heart and abdomen - doctors have said "the next hours will decide everything". Medical officials appealed for blood donations. "Civic Platform tortured me".

A local police spokesman said the detained man was a 27-year-old who lived in Gdansk, a Baltic coast city with a population of around half a million. "Pawel, we are with you".

He was part of the democratic opposition born in the city under the leadership of Lech Walesa during the 1980s which helped to bring down the Communist regime. After leaving Civic Platform, he was re-elected to a sixth term as an independent candidate in the fall. He marched in last year's gay pride parade, a rare action for a mayor in Poland.

A man is held on the ground by security personnel after he attacked the mayor of Gdansk during a charity event.

He also showed solidarity with the Jewish community when the city's synagogue had its windows broken previous year, strongly denouncing the vandalism.

In an unusual display of unity in Poland, messages of support for Adamowicz flowed in from politicians from different ends of the political spectrum. A second man was stabbed and injured.

At the time, Law and Justice was in the opposition and Kaczynski blamed the attack on an "atmosphere of hate" under rival party Civic Platform.
