NBC Officially Cuts Ties With Megyn Kelly

Was Megyn Kelly always doomed at NBC?_00020316

Megyn Kelly and NBC have parted ways, nearly three months after the host was ousted from her perch as the host of the third hour of Today.

Kelly's future with NBC was in doubt long before she suggested it was appropriate for white people to wear Halloween costumes with blackface during a segment of her 9 a.m. talk show.

Later that day, Kelly apologized to NBC staff in a memo, which was then criticized by Al Roker during the first hour of Today on October 24.

Terms were not disclosed.

NBC announced Friday night that it has reached a final exit agreement (see: payout) with Kelly, whose departure was prompted when she questioned on air whether wearing blackface as part of a Halloween costume is actually racist.

Her announcement came after NBC terminated her three-year, $69 million contract - but vowed to pay the full value left on her paycheck.

Despite her differences with NBC News management, Kelly won accolades for her interviews with accusers of President Donald Trump, Bill O'Reilly, Harvey Weinstein, Roy Moore and other powerful men.

While at Fox, her accusations of unwanted sexual advances by the network's late chief executive, Roger Ailes, helped lead to his firing.

"But what is racist?" she wondered aloud.

Both Kelly's morning show and Sunday evening news program struggled to find viewers. "Because truly you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on white face for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as a character". Her daily morning show, "Megyn Kelly Today", suffered low ratings, and her assertive style at times seemed out of place in the anodyne environment of morning television.

Critics accused her of ignoring the ugly history of minstrel shows and movies in which whites applied blackface to mock blacks. NBC would not comment Friday on whether the separation agreement allows her to write about her experiences at the network.
