Pompeo confident of US deal with Turkey to protect Kurds

‘We Don’t Take Orders From Bolton’: Pentagon Plans Syria Withdrawal

Democratic Party legislator Adam Schiff on Friday lashed out at the Donald Trump administration for its decision to pull the U.S. out of Syria.

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a US resident, entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2 seeking documents that would have allowed him to marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. A U.S. defence department report estimated in August that there might be as many as 14,000 jihadists left in Syria and 17,000 in Iraq. Troops work mostly out of small camps in remote parts of the country's northeast.

There are 2,000 American troops in Syria.

Turkey continues to cooperate closely with Russian Federation to implement the agreements on the Syrian province of Idlib reached by the presidents of both countries in September previous year, Turkey's Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Saturday.

Colonel Sean Ryan, spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State, said the process of removing troops for the country had started. Other U.S. officials later made clear that the pullout did not yet include troops.

A readout of the meeting from the Joint Staff said that Dunford, Guler and Akar "discussed the security situation in Syria, the completion of the Manbij roadmap [on security cooperation], and the deliberate, coordinated effort to withdraw USA ground forces from Syria".

Turkish forces have been deploying for weeks along the Syrian border.

President Donald Trump last month claimed the Islamic State group had been defeated and said U.S. troops would return home "now". Two weeks before Trump announced he was ordering a pullout, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US still had a long way to go in training local Syrian forces to stabilize areas ridden of the IS group.

"The damage is done", said Fabrice Balanche, a geographer and Syria expert. They described the draw-down at the base, held by USA forces for the past two years, as "slow and steady".

Confirmation of the first withdrawals comes amid confusion over plans to implement President Donald Trump's pullout order and threats from Turkey to attack the Kurds, who have been America's partners on the ground in the war against the Islamic State group in Syria.

She also confessed that the terrorist organization forcefully recruited underage children and sent them to fight against Turkish soldiers during the Operation Olive Branch.

In Ankara on Tuesday, Erdogan refused to meet with U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton, who earlier had appeared to set conditions on the U.S.withdrawal, including the lasting defeat of the Islamic State and guarantees that Turkey would not attack the YPG.

In a speech in Cairo on Thursday, Mr Pompeo vowed that the United States would "expel every last Iranian boot" from Syria, where Tehran is supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Pompeo said Trump considers the kingdom a "key ally" for the US and their partnership will keep going.

The US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said the move had "dangerous implications" for stability, would "negatively affect the campaign against terrorism" and create "a political and military vacuum". He has questioned the wisdom of continuing the 17-year war in Afghanistan and recently demanded that about half of the 14,000 US troops there be sent home.
