Scottish Government writes to MPs ahead of crucial Brexit vote

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks outside 10 Downing Street after a confidence vote by Conservative Party Members of Parliament, in London Britain

It came as a senior pro-Remain Tory said Brexit should be delayed if Mrs May's deal is defeated next week.

This could end centuries of "moderate" politics in the United Kingdom, he said, as he urged his colleagues to back Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal.

Mr Hunt warned that failure to deliver Brexit would be "incredibly damaging" for the United Kingdom and something the country would regret for "many, many generations".

Dominic Grieve has urged the Prime Minister to delay Brexit in the likely case that her withdrawal agreement is rejected by MPs next week.

Mr Corbyn told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show: "We will table a motion of no confidence in the Government at a time of our choosing, but it's going to be soon, don't worry about it".

He said if it is defeated, Britain should continue to press the European Union for a deal that "respects the referendum but if Brussels' "intransigence" persists "we must be willing to leave the European Union at the end of March on World Trade Organisation terms".

Asked whether MPs could bring forward legislation to revoke Article 50, Cable told BBC TV: "Yes that is exactly what will happen and that is exactly what we should be doing because it would be absolutely outrageous and unforgivable if the chaotic circumstances of a no deal were allowed to happen".

MPs will gather at Westminster Monday to resume their marathon debate on the Brexit bill ahead of the vote early Tuesday evening.

He said there would be a "different tone" in British politics if Britain failed to leave the European Union, and predicted a "less tolerant society" and a "more nationalistic nation".

Mr Hunt warned: "If we were, as a political class, not to deliver Brexit, that would be a fundamental breach of trust between the people and the politicians".

In a significant shift of tone apparently created to win over hardline Brexiteers who have set their faces against Mrs May's deal, Mr Hunt warned that defeat next week would not necessarily provide MPs with the opportunity to choose their preferred version of Brexit. "We will do everything we can to prevent a no deal exit".

The vote had been scheduled to take place in December but was called off at the last minute by the prime minister, who was facing nearly certain defeat.

Pressed on whether freedom of movement could ever be controlled in a Common Market 2.0 scenario, he said he believed it could - adding: "Should the prime minister not get the deal through, I think Common Market 2.0 is a deal many MPs could rally behind". What I think he's trying to do is ensure Parliament has an absolute say in it.
