Toyota Wants 1.7 Million Vehicles Back Because Airbags Are ‘Potentially Deadly’

Toyota did not say whether it had been notified of injuries or serious incidents related to the latest recall

Toyota has announced the recall of 1.7 million Toyota and Lexus cars on Wednesday due to airbag issues.

The move announced Wednesday includes 1.3 million vehicles in the US and is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in the nation's history. Previously, 37 million United States vehicles with 50 million inflators were recalled and 16.7 million inflators remain to be replaced.

The latest development in the Takata airbag recall, which affected most automakers, could see shrapnel flung across the vehicle when the airbag deploys in certain Toyota and Lexus cars.

The recall covers Toyota models including the 2010 through 2016 4Runner, the 2010 through 2013 Corolla and Matrix, and the 2011 through 2014 Sienna.

Because of a defect in the airbag, the Takata inflators can explode with too much force, potentially causing sharp metal fragments to pass through the airbag and spray directly at the driver and passengers, increasing the risk of death or serious injury.

At least 23 people have been killed worldwide and hundreds have been injured. Automakers are scheduled to replace 10 million more starting this month. Ford and Honda have already announced recalls. In April, auto components maker Key Safety Systems completed a US$1.6 billion (RM6.58 billion) deal to acquire Takata.

Dealerships will replace either the airbag inflators or entire airbag systems.
