'You had Trump say only nice things about Putin.

Ron Johnson (R-WI) about reports that President Donald Trump was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for possibly being a Kremlin agent, only to have the senator launch a diatribe attacking Democrats and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Speaking to Fox News' Jeanine Pirro, Trump denied the reporting and said, "you'd see that they found absolutely nothing".

When asked by Pirro on Saturday about the Times' report and whether he had ever worked for Russia, Trump said, "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked".

Trump's claim was disputed by Virginia Sen.

Warner is a member of the 'Gang of Eight, ' a bipartisan group of senior lawmakers from the House and Senate who receive classified intelligence briefings from the White House.

The New York Times reported that Trump's behavior in the days around his firing of James Comey as FBI director helped trigger the counterintelligence part of the investigation. "The idea that's contained in the New York Times story that President Trump was a threat to American national security is silly on its face and not worthy of a response".

"I have concluded that the Treasury Department's proposal is flawed and fails to sufficiently limit Oleg Deripaska's control and influence of these companies, and the Senate should move to block this misguided effort by the Trump Administration and keep these sanctions in place", the New York Democrat said in a statement.

Trump's relations with Russian Federation before his election in 2016 are the focus of an ongoing criminal inquiry led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Investigators are trying to establish whether there was any collusion between Trump's campaign team and Russian officials. The Times reported Mueller also took over the counterintelligence investigation, but the paper said it is unclear whether that aspect of his investigation is ongoing.

Cruz, who sits on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, said he will consider any evidence provided but isn't going to base his decisions on "unsubstantiated media reports". He and other Democratic senators said this report and others within the past week questioning Trump's behavior toward Russian Federation give new urgency to the need for the Mueller investigation to be allowed to run its course.

Current and former USA officials told the paper that Trump's efforts include confiscating the notes from his interpreter and not allowing them to discuss the details of the meetings with other officials in his administration.

Engel told NPR that issuing a subpoena for an interpreter would be the last resort to find out details of Trump's discussions with Putin. "Anyone could have listened to that meeting".

Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the counterintelligence inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".

"This is just at odds with how presidents have conducted diplomacy for decades and decades in the United States", said Washington Post reporter Greg Miller in a Sunday interview with NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro on Weekend Edition.

Trump has repeatedly and vociferously denied collusion with the Russians.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has defended the decision, saying the companies are undergoing a major restructuring to "sever Deripaska's control and significantly diminish his ownership".
