BAFTA suspends Bryan Singer nomination post allegations

HOLLYWOOD CA- FEBRUARY 26 Director Bryan Singer attends the premiere of New Line Cinema's 'Jack The Giant Slayer' at TCL Chinese Theatre

As one of the most prestigious ceremonies of the year, the awards recognize outstanding achievements in film and television, with a focus on championing British cinema.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards are fast approaching with some of the biggest names in Hollywood set to be out in force in London later this week, when the award ceremony takes place at the Royal Albert Hall on February 10.

BAFTA released a statement which it said: "In light of recent very serious allegations, Bafta has informed Bryan Singer that his nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody has been suspended, effective immediately".

Bohemian Rhapsody received a total of seven BAFTA film nominations, all of which remain in place.

"Bafta considers the alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values".

The nomination "suspension" placed on Singer "will remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved", the statement read. Singer has denied the allegations.

Anna Smith, chair of the London film critics circle and host of the Girls on Film podcast, is encouraged by the changes but dismayed by the Bafta voters' failure to nominate a single woman in the best director category.

Singer did not direct all of the film after disputes about his absences from the set.

There are varying stories as to what eventually led to Singer being fired a few days later.

"BAFTA has removed Bryan Singer's name from "Bohemian Rhapsody's" British Film nomination.after voting has closed, natch".

The move, which comes amid the #MeToo push-back against sexual assault in Hollywood, appears to be among the first times that a major awards nomination was withdrawn due to allegations of sexual misconduct.
