California high speed rail plan scaled back

Gavin Newsom

Gov. Gavin Newsom delivers the State of the State Address at the California State Capitol, February 12, 2019.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a democrat, also ordered the removal of most of the National Guard troops deployed at her state's border after her Republican predecessor granted the Trump administration's request past year, Reuters reported.

Newsom criticized "fear-mongering that's coming out of the White House", likening Trump's rhetoric on immigrants to George W. Bush opposing same-sex marriage when he was president, during an era when LGBT people had less public support and fewer civil protections.

His address will offer yet another opportunity for Newsom to outline his vision for California, a state dominated by Democrats, and contrast it with stalemates in Washington.

But the only time the governor mentioned Trump's name was to praise him.

In his first State of the State address since taking office, Newsom also took several swipes at U.S. President Donald Trump, calling the Republican's immigration policies "political theater" based on misrepresentations.

"This is a bipartisan issue - at least it should be - and I hope he follows through, and takes the lead of California in the process", he said.

The long-touted dream of a high-speed rail line connecting San Diego and Los Angeles with the Bay Area was put on hold Tuesday, with Gov. Gavin Newsom saying that while he respects the idea, the project needs a major reevaluation. The project, he said, would "cost too much" and "take too long" to be feasible. The project's price tag at one point hit $99 billion. He acknowledged critics would ding this move as a "train to nowhere, but I think that's wrong and I think that's offensive".

The Trump administration has not yet responded to Newsom's announcement.

"Newsom pledged to finish the segment already under construction through California's Central Valley".

The embattled $77-billion bullet train has been an embarrassment for the Golden State and has been plagued by problems nearly from the start. Jeff Stone said in a statement.

Gary Reyes/TNS/NewscomCalifornia's wasteful, expensive, and likely doomed-to-fail statewide bullet train project is getting killed. However, the section in the Central Valley will still go ahead.

Don't tell Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and her socialist chums who want to eliminate air travel and replace it with high-speed rail, but the leftist governor of California has just canceled the long-developing high-speed train from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The rail project, which was meant to connect the northern and southern parts of the state, will now connect Bakersfield and Merced in the San Joaquin Valley breadbasket, filling a glaring gap in the state system and keeping Newsom's campaign promise to help that often overlooked part of California.

Newsom distanced himself from fellow Democrat and four-term governor Jerry Brown in partially unwinding two of his popular predecessor's signature projects: bypassing the fragile California Delta with a set of tunnels to divert water from upstream and building a $77 billion high-speed rail line.
