Charges: Jail nurse killed husband, wanted to wed inmate

Jail nurse accused of fatally poisoning husband with antifreeze so she could marry inmate who’s serving life sentence for murder

Claypool is serving a life sentence for murder, according to prison records.

Amy Murray, 40, is facing charges including first-degree murder and arson in the December 11 death of her husband, Joshua Murray. Investigators determined that the fire was deliberately set and Joshua Murray was already dead, poisoned with antifreeze, when it broke out.

A woman in Missouri is accused of poisoning her husband with antifreeze, placing his body on a bed and setting him on fire so she could marry an inmate. Investigators quickly determined an accelerant was used to start the fire, making it the work of arson. "She went to tell her husband, who slept in a separate room, but found him dead", a news report at the time said. An autopsy later revealed that the victim died of poisoning before the fire was set.

Murray reported finding the home ablaze when she returned from taking the couple's 11-year-old son and two dogs to a McDonald's, a Miller County sheriff's detective wrote in a probable cause statement released last week.

In recorded phone calls at the facility, Murray told Claypool she wanted to divorce her husband.

She was allegedly having an affair with Eugene Claypool, an inmate at Jefferson City Correctional Center, where she worked as a nurse, at the time of the blaze.

At the time, Murray was working as a nurse at the Jefferson City Correctional Center when she began having a "romantic relationship" with inmate Eugene Claypool, who was convicted in the 2000 stabbing death of a $1.7 million elderly lottery victor.

Claypool, according to police, has been behind bars since 2002 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2000 stabbing death of Donald Hardwick, a 72-year-old homebound man who'd won a $1.7 million Missouri Lottery jackpot in 1998.

Amy was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Police said the pair talked of being married and in one conversation, Amy said they could be Wednesday because her husband was dead and "out of the picture," KMIZ-TV reported.

She is scheduled for a bond-reduction hearing on February 13.
