Ex-White House aide Cliff Sims sues Trump over nondisclosure agreements

Cliff Sims, the former White House communications aide who wrote an insider account of life working for President Trump, is suing the president in his official capacity, alleging that he used his campaign organization as a "cutout" to improperly seek retribution against former employees and keep them from invoking their First Amendment rights.

Sims is bringing the suit against Trump "in his official capacity as President" and is seeking an injunction against the nondisclosure agreements Trump had him agree to when he worked at the White House.

But Zaid, citing "sources", charged the arbitration was filed on Trump's orders, thereby violating Sims' First Amendment protections, since the US government - in this case, the president - is prohibited by the Constitution from silencing federal employees once they leave office, unless it pertains to classified information.

The Times reports that the lawsuit accuses Trump of using his campaign to punish him.

"A low level staffer that I hardly knew named Cliff Sims wrote yet another boring book based on made up stories and fiction", Trump tweeted on January 29. In the following days, the Trump campaign announced that it had begun arbitration proceedings against Sims.

Less than 20 minutes later, Glassner tweeted that the Trump campaign was "preparing to file suit against Cliff Sims for violating our NDA".

The lawsuit says Trump "is seeking to impose civil liability against Mr. Sims through application of NDAs that apply to information Mr. Sims learned exclusively during his federal service".

Last year, former senior adviser Omarosa Manigault Newman claimed in her own tell-all book that the Trump campaign had offered her a $15,000-a-month job in exchange for signing an NDA that would have barred her from disclosing details of her time at the White House.

"I wanted to stand up and say that I'm not going to be pushed into a corner, I'm not going to be bullied on this and stand up for myself", Sims said.
