Mars One Fizzles Into Bankruptcy After Promising A New Life In Space

It looked like the final nail in the coffin for the organization, which was founded back in 2012 with the stated goal of taking humanity to the Red Planet via a reality TV show that would select a handful of finalists from thousands of astronaut applicants, but was repeatedly accused of being a scam preying on people's enthusiasm for Mars.

In case you missed the news yesterday: A redditor discovered a Swiss court filing from January in which Mars One was officially declared bankrupt.

Mars One Ventures has for some time been involved in the controversy over its dubious plan to send individuals to Mars, where they would supposedly live out the remainder of their lives.

By 2015, a Mars One insider had blown the whistle on the organization.

The company had recently whittled down its large application list of would-be Martians to 100 names, with plans to reduce it further before starting full-time training. The company goes on to explain that it's going to "redirect its focus" and attempt to actually make good on its claims of a manned Mars mission. Although the non-profit arm of the company is alive, it lacks investment to do anything.

In July, the company reported it had an investment from Phoenix Enterprises for up to $14 million that was meant to be used to pay for licensing fees and re-list Mars One Ventures on the stock exchange.

Mars One's timelines were continually evolving, as well.

But going to Mars is a ridiculously complicated multi-billion-dollar affair, and Mars One never really proved it was serious enough to tackle the interplanetary challenge.

Founder Bas Lansdorp, confirmed the news to Engadget and told the publication he was "working to find a solution". And she said she was still excited at the idea of getting to Mars someday - perhaps by applying for NASA's space program and joining one of its missions to Earth's neighbor.
