Music's top stars hit the Grammys, Carlile and Gaga early winners

Grammys Preview

Other performers include Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, H.E.R., Janelle Monae, Kacey Musgraves, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dan + Shay.

Brandi Carlile, Lady Gaga and Kacey Musgraves won multiple Grammys in the show's pre-telecast Sunday, a year after women were nearly muted at the 2018 awards show.

Childish Gambino won the coveted prize for best music video for his politically provocative "This Is America".

"This is just the beginning of moving to a more inclusive future", Monae said.

To help combat the Grammys' much-discussed diversity problem, the Recording Academy expanded the major categories to eight nominees each - so now that the field is wider than ever, expect some upsets. This marks yet another rough year for the Grammys. A study released by the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative days before the ceremony found that of the 899 individuals who had been nominated for the previous six shows, 90.7 percent were men.

For the second consecutive year, black hip-hop artists are leading the pack - but observers are still wondering if nominations success can translate into big wins.

H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith are also up for best new artist.

This week Ariana Grande blasted Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich and accused him of lying about why she was no longer performing at the show. She said: "I know what it feels like to be on that stage, and I'm going to bring that vibe and energy". I got to thank God, thank you for looking out for me.

But, if and when you hear her name tonight, in the context of nominees or as the victor, now you know a little more about who she is.

There was a tie for best rap performance, and Drake was surprisingly not one of the winners.

The seven members of the massively successful K-Pop boy band - RM, V, J-Hope, Suga, Jungkook, Jimin and Jin - posed for pictures while arriving at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 10) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

When asked soon after the show about the lack of female winners, academy president Neil Portnow said women needed to "step up" - now-infamous words that instantly drew outrage, and which he said were taken out of context.

Songstress Alicia Keys, a 15-time Grammy victor, is set to host Sunday's televised ceremony - the first woman to do so in 14 years. Legendary singer Diana Ross will also perform to celebrate her 75th birthday and musical achievements. Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day will honor the late Aretha Franklin with a performance.
