Racing to resume in Great Britain

Clerk of Ludlow Racecourse Simon Sherwood said a deep clean is under way Racing at Ludlow has been suspended Hunting has been hit by the outbreak

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced last night that a risk-managed return to racing will take place from Wednesday this week.

"They say that if you go in many yard across the country and across Ireland you will find the odd horse here and there that has equine flu and we don't stop horse racing".

The sport has been on hold since last Thursday, after three cases of the highly-contagious virus - subsequently rising to six - were identified at the yard of Grand National-winning trainer Donald McCain in Cheshire.

Fears there might be an extended suspension, and a possible impact on next month's Cheltenham Festival - one of the showpiece events of the British racing calendar - intensified when a second outbreak, involving four vaccinated horses, was confirmed at the yard of trainer Simon Crisford in Newmarket, eastern England, on Sunday.

The British Horseracing Authority was yesterday deliberating on a resumption in the United Kingdom and tweeted late last night: 'This evening's veterinary committee meeting has been extensive in order to ensure that a thorough risk assessment has been carried out. "This risk has been assessed and, based on the evidence - and ensuring biosecurity measures are in place - the level of risk is viewed as acceptable".

The horses that tested positive on Wednesday had been vaccinated - which is mandatory for nearly all breeds used in racing - prompting fears of a widespread outbreak of a mutant strain of the disease.

"We didn't want to take any risks with future race meetings and with all known advice, we took the decision we did in the best interests of returning to racing".

A total of 174 racing stables were placed in lockdown, while thousands of horses were tested for the virus.

"As long as they can fulfil that requirement, they are fine".

Media reports have estimated that the overall costs to racing will be in the region between £150m to £200m, with racing fixtures such as the Super Saturday at Newbury expected to cost bookmakers up to £2m a day.

"Having had the opportunity to consider things over the weekend, the board have made the decision that we are able to support that movement - which is obviously good news for everybody".

Trainers with runners for Wednesday are advised to declare at 10 a.m., after which the BHA will review all declarations to ensure none have been declared that do not meet the risk criteria.

"The critical thing is they have to have had the correct vaccination within the eight weeks preceding the run".

In a statement, Crisford said: "None of the four horses that have returned positive tests for equine influenza displayed any clinical signs of respiratory illness, including nasal discharge and elevated temperatures, prior to the mandatory swabbing that was undertaken last Friday, February 8".
