Refugee footballer freed after Bahrain drops extradition

The Bahraini footballer Hakeem al-Araibi is set to return to Australia after Thai authorities withdrew an extradition case against him.

The director-general of worldwide affairs for the Thai Government confirmed to the ABC that the Attorney-General requested the case for Mr al-Araibi's extradition to Bahrain be dropped.

The player's Australia lawyer Latifa Al-Haouli of Sabelberg Morcos Lawyers, told SBS News on Monday legal staff were working with Thailand's department of corrections to secure Mr Al-Araibi's release imminently.

Mr Araibi's supporters said he should be freed and is protected under his status as a refugee with Australian residency.

Bahrain footballer Hakeem al-Araibi is brought to the Criminal Court in Bangkok on Feb 4 for an extradition request from Bahrain. He has been living in Melbourne, where he plays for a semi-professional football team.


Al-Araibi has said he was blindfolded and had his legs beaten while he was held in Bahrain previously.

The footballer had been sentenced to 10 years' jail in absentia by Bahrain for alleged vandalism, but he denies any involvement. The Australian government, Fifa and other football bodies have supported his case.

"This morning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed us that Bahrain was no longer interested in this request", OAG foreign office chief Chatchom Akapin said.

The 25-year-old fears being returned to Bahrain where he believes he could face imprisonment and torture. She said "a great deal" of work had gone on behind the scenes.
