Ryan Adams accused of sexual misconduct

Ryan Adams Accused of Sexual Misconduct and Career Manipulation in ‘New York Times’ Piece

Adams launched his music career with the band Whiskeytown and made his solo debut in 2000 with the album "Heartbreaker".

That boost could come in the form of a coveted support slot on his tours, the chance to write music with him, or to release music on PAX-AM. Their divorce was finalised in 2016.

Musician Ryan Adams is facing allegations of emotional abuse and harassment from seven women, including his ex-wife, Mandy Moore. They married in 2009 and a year later, he offered to help her with an album.

She claimed to The NY Times that Adams impacted on her career by persuading her not to work with other producers.

He took control of her music in 2010 but wouldn't record with her, regularly bumping her to work with other female musicians and discouraging her from working with anyone else, lashing out when she questioned him.

Fans responses to the accusations against Adams have been swift and damning; on Twitter, many are sharing their grief at realising the man they idolised for many years may have been using his power in the music industry not just to get into the trousers of women he promised the world to, but also to stifle the career of his ex-wife Mandy Moore.

Adam's label, Pax-Am, is connected to Capitol Music Group, meaning his influence could have easily pushed an established artist like Moore to greater heights, but he also sought out new and undiscovered talent.

Adams, through his lawyer, has disputed Butterworth's account of his behaviour as controlling, abusive, or physically intimidating.

Another artist who accuses Adams of wrongdoing in the piece is Ava - identified by her middle name - a now-20-year-old bass player who was 13 years old when she alleges Adams struck up an online correspondence with her, accusing him of exposing himself during phone sex over Skype video chats.

"I never see pics of you anymore", Adams allegedly texted Ava in 2014, when she was 16. Days later, the paper reported, he said: "If people knew they would say I was like R Kelley lol". Their short-lived relationship became emotionally abusive when he frequently demanded to know where she was and threatened suicide if she didn't respond to his texts quickly, she said. Adams denied everything online, saying that he and Moore had different views of their relationship and that he's made mistakes in the past.

In response to the report, Adams' attorney Andrew B. Brettler denied all allegations. One of those is Courtney Jaye, an unsigned singer who says she got a contextless DM from Adams in 2013 inviting her to collaborate. "It was just sexual power", says Ava. "You feel like there's no way other people have been treated like this".

Nothing came of their writing, and Moore said Adams was disparaging and emotionally abusive, "always" telling her she wasn't "a real musician".

When the relationship ended in 2018 he allegedly hounded her digitally, sending her hundreds of texts and harassing her long after their split. She accepted after discussing Adams' behaviour with her manager, telling the Times, "the first day, he asked me to bring him something in his hotel room".

Two other women who chose to remain unnamed also shared similar experiences.

Adams' lawyer said the singer denied all of the "extremely serious and outlandish accusations" from the "disgruntled individuals". "To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly".

However he said the report is "upsettingly inaccurate".
