Savage Released From ICE Detainment

His release comes hours after a group of 10 civil rights organizations is delivered a petition with more than 445,000 signatures demanding the release of rapper 21 Savage by ICE on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, 21 Savage's lawyers also passed on a message to the young rapper's fans, saying that while he was not at Sunday's Grammys Awards - "he was there in spirit and is grateful for the support from around the world". "And he asks for your hearts and minds to be with them".

It has been over a week since the artist, née She'yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for being an "unlawfully present United Kingdom national".

21 Savage's attorneys argued that he lost his legal status in 2006 "through no fault of his own" and applied for a visa in 2017 once he learned he was in the country illegally.

Additional information suggested that Abraham-Joseph entered the US lawfully in 2005. That application is pending, his attorneys said. In "Bank Account", for example, he raps that he is "straight up out the 6". The "Bank Account" rapper has repeatedly stated in interviews he was from Atlanta. "My best friend who died, his uncle had a whole lot of dope money, so he started buying me studio sets and s**t", 21 Savage said.

Abraham-Joseph was convicted on felony drug charges in Georgia in 2014, and was arrested as part of a targeted operation with the cooperation of local law enforcement, an ICE spokesman told Reuters when the rapper was taken into custody.

He began rapping in 2013 and became part of Atlanta's robust underground hip-hop scene.

His latest album was released last month and spent the first two weeks of 2019 atop the Billboard 200.
