Staff member shot in Baltimore high school; no students were injured

The Baltimore Police Department received emergency calls around noon Friday that a staff member at Frederick Douglass High School had been shot

Ashooting occurred at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, Maryland around noon today.

The district tweeted that students and staff are safe.

The suspect, who has not been identified, is in custody. Officials said the victim was in serious but stable condition.

"In a city where violence is too present, our schools must be havens of safety and peace, where confrontation and weapons have no place".

During a press conference, officials said the staff member who was shot was a hall monitor.

"These schools are just not secure", he added.

Police believe the suspect is an "outside person" who wanted to confront someone in the school.

The 25-year-old suspect entered the school lobby and got into an argument with Marks, investigators said.

"Sadly, we predicted this. We have been telling everyone this has less to do with students and more with people who want to harm them", he told the AFRO.

"It was clear and evident today this guy meant to kill someone".

He criticized a recent unanimous vote by Baltimore's school board rejecting firearms for school resource officers posted to city schools. Police say when they arrived they found a 56-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his lower torso.

G'Mar Matthews, an 18-year-old senior, said metal detectors at the school's main entrance were generally deactivated after classes begin for the day.
