As Deadline Looms, Brexit Needs More Time

UK Parliament votes to delay Brexit but rejects second referendum

Prime Minister Theresa May will try to persuade MPs for a third time to back her Brexit deal over the coming days.

Britain will now nearly certainly not leave the bloc as initially scheduled on March 29. Now it looks as if this is Mrs May's most likely course of action. However this will require unanimous agreement from the 27 leaders, which is not guaranteed as the EU's chief negotiator and several leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have said there would need to be a good reason given.

A senior European Union official is floating the possibility of a two-step delay to Britain's departure from the bloc, now scheduled for March 29. Many Brexit supporters in her own party oppose the deal, saying it ties Britain too closely to the EU.

"This deal has now reached the end of the road".

PROFESSOR MARC STEARS, director of the Sydney Policy Lab at the University of Sydney.

After two and a half years of negotiations, alongside two Brexit defeat of UK PM May's amended Brexit proposal, UK businesses had welcomed the House of Common's decision to avert a no-deal Brexit catastrophe, as the British currency had risen to 9-month high following the vote on Wednesday and the London stocks seemed mostly optimistic despite a currency dependent stock exchange and a closure in the red.

What has happened so far?

Leaders in other European Union states have already begun to question the objective of an extension, given the impasse plaguing British Parliament.

Only 112 Tory MPs backed the motion - but, thanks to anti-Brexit, left-liberal opposition MPs siding with the Prime Minister in large numbers, it passed anyway.

The prime minister is accepting she will miss one of the biggest targets she has ever set herself.

Using a threat of a lengthy extension to Article 50, she has made clear that her negotiated divorce deal is still on the table and seeks to push rebel lawmakers into supporting it, despite having had it rejected twice - in January by a historic margin, and again earlier this week, on Tuesday.

If MPs approve Mrs May's deal before the Brussels summit, she could ask the European Union to delay Brexit until 30 June.

Still, Mrs May has an arduous task ahead.

Then, on Thursday, the Commons voted by 413 to 202 to seek an extension to Article 50 - the legal mechanism by which the United Kingdom is due to leave the EU. "She will bring it back for a third time next week and (it) probably stands a better than 50-50 chance of passing despite everything". "The Prime Minister is not going to extend Article 50".
