Bangladesh cricketers escape New Zealand mosque shooting

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal

Members of the Bangladesh cricket team have described on social media their narrow escape from a mass shooting at a Christchurch mosque on New Zealand's South Island on Friday.

Mario Villavarayan, the team's strength and conditioning coach, said it had been a close call.

Witnesses told local media that several people appeared to be injured inside the building. "They may even be refugees here", Arden said.

"In future, whenever we send our cricket team overseas we will do that after examining and reviewing the security matters of the host countries", Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Saturday, according to the state-run news agency BSS.

"Importantly, our players are safe".

After arriving at the site, the team were reportedly told to stay on the bus outside the mosque on Deans Avenue before travelling back to Hagley Oval on foot.

"We will set up a minimum security standard for future".

The New Zealand Herald has reported a spokesman for the Black Caps saying that New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White would call off the match shortly.

"It's quite unbelievable really. Every team has to be alerted", he said.

Arrangements are now being made for the Bangladesh team to return home as soon as possible.

Player Tamim Iqbal tweeted that it was a "frightening experience" and that there were "active shooters".

He posted, "Entire team got saved from active shooters! We cancelled the net session and started for the prayers", Srinivas, who played for the St Therese Convent School in Dombivli and Kelkar College in Mulund, said. "We are all so saddened by the bad tragedy in Christchurch, and out of respect, neither our players nor team management will comment further on the Plunket Shield championship until the completion of the final round".

"W$3 e r extremely lucky", Mushfiqur said.

"If we were there three to four minutes earlier, we would have been in the mosque, massive thing might have happened".

New Zealand had already lost the Test series and the first three ODIs before the incident. White said Friday's incident would "greatly affect" the country. "I'm sure all of New Zealand will take a look at their approach".

"The Bangladesh team may have prayed at the same mosque before but I don't think they were the target", he underscored.

Pakistan has been unable to host matches at home since 2009, when gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lanka team to a match in Lahore. Six members of the team were wounded, while six security personnel and two civilians were killed.

"This is shocking. This will change the entire fabric of worldwide sports hosting".

New Zealand have not toured Pakistan since 2002 following a suicide bombing outside their hotel in Karachi and instead played their games in the United Arab Emirates. Later, the players went back to their hotel.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by the shocking situation in Christchurch. Again both teams and support staff groups are safe".
