China does not ask firms to spy on others, says Premier Li

Premier Li Keqiang said the government would not ask any company to spy on its behalf

China and the united states have become closely intertwined through years of development and cooperation, it is neither realistic nor possible to decouple the two economies, he said.

As countries from Asia to Europe evaluate their position on the company, Li said China's government has never asked and will not ask Chinese companies to spy in the future.

Noting that both China and the EU are important poles in a multi-polar world, Li said a growing China-EU relationship serves the interests of both sides and the world.

China will "never" ask its firms to spy on other nations, Premier Li Keqiang said Friday, amid USA warnings that Chinese telecommunications behemoth Huawei poses security risks.

A summit to seal a trade deal between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will not happen at the end of March as previously discussed, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Thursday. Earlier this month, a hike in tariffs was put on hold because of promising progress, but USA officials have recently noted that "major issues" remain.

On Friday, China's parliament approved a new foreign investment law that promises to create a transparent environment for foreign firms, though there is scepticism about its enforceability.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is not mincing words when he tries to convince the world that Beijing will not use Chinese companies to spy on other countries.

China's government voiced support last week for a lawsuit Huawei filed against the United States over legislation preventing American federal agencies from buying its equipment and services.

Since August a year ago, Trump's administration has banned the use of products and services of ZTE and Huawei, which was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the Chinese military.

As a tit-for-tat tariff escalation with the United States - worth hundreds of billions of dollars - has choked exports as well as private spending and investment at home, Li pledged to implement "strong measures" to prop up the nation's economy.

The Chinese government has additional monetary policy measures that it can take to support economic growth this year, and will even cut "its own flesh" to help finance large-scale tax cuts, Premier Li Keqiang said on Friday.

The Xinhua report and Li's remarks are a positive uptick.

Li expressed confidence Beijing can achieve its annual growth target of 6 to 6.5 percent.

"Issues related to the Korean Peninsula are complicated and will not be resolved overnight", Li said, calling on Washington and Pyongyang to "patiently" promote denuclearization negotiations.
