FBI debated in 2016 how aggressively to probe Trump campaign

Mr. Strzok also disputed the meaning of the now-infamous text exchange where Ms. Page anxious Mr. Trump would become president and he replied "No". The transcripts reveal the context of Page's texts to Strzok, including the idea of having an "insurance policy" in the case of his election.

Former FBI official Peter Strzok told Congress in 2018 that he deleted "personal" communications he had with his mistress, former FBI attorney Lisa Page.

"No he won't. We'll stop it", Strzok replied.

Both Page and Strzok no longer work at the FBI - Page resigned and Strzok was sacked.

Reacting to the development Wednesday, President Donald Trump said that Page's testimony confirmed the Obama-era Justice Department was a "broken and corrupt machine".

"Included in the transcripts provided to us is information suggesting Brennan was aware of the so-called Steele dossier in early August 2016, and that he included information regarding the dossier in a briefing given to then-Sen".

Earlier this month, Rep. Douglas A. Collins (R-Ga.), the House Judiciary Committee's ranking Republican, also released the transcript of an August interview with Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, who had contact with the author of a controversial dossier - partially funded by Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee - alleging that Trump had personal and financial ties in Russian Federation.

Hillary Clinton was not a target, witness, subject or suspect during the investigation into her storage and sending of classified emails on her home server, fired FBI Agent Peter Strzok told Congress past year, according to transcripts released Thursday.

Collins made the announcement that the transcripts would be made available because "the Amerian people deserve transparency and deserve to know what transpired at the highest echelons of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The Justice Department's internal watchdog conducted an exhaustive review of the FBI's investigation of Clinton's handling of a private email server while she was secretary of state.

"She claimed that former FBI Director James Comey proposed the gross negligence charge to the DOJ multiple times as he received their advice, and at one point in Page's hearing, Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) asked her if the Department was essentially telling the FBI "'You're not going to charge gross negligence because we're the prosecutors and we're telling you we're not going to'". McCabe has said he could not recall such a meeting taking place.
