Former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel signs player agreement with AAF

Johnny Manziel reportedly signs agreement to play in the AAF

Former Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy victor Johnny Manziel has signed a player agreement with the Alliance of American football, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Manziel was released by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League earlier this month.

The 26-year-old former Heisman Trophy victor last played for the Montreal Alouettes in 2018, where he threw for almost 1,300 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games. Brandon Silvers played the majority of the game, completing 23 of 37 passes for 242 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. He added another 1,410 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground.

Johnny Football is heading to Memphis to resume his football career. Mettenberger had replaced Christian Hackenberg as Memphis' starter, so coach Mike Singletary could look to Manziel to lead his squad.

Just weeks after he was released by his Canadian Football League team and essentially banned from signing anywhere else, the former Heisman Trophy victor gets yet another shot to show that he has something left in the tank.

He immediately becomes one of the biggest names in the AAF as one of its few former National Football League first-round picks, notably among them Birmingham running back Trent Richardson.

Manziel will be immediately eligible to play for the Express, an AAF spokesperson said. Other than Orlando, which has Garrett Gilbert at quarterback, most of the league's teams have had some issues at the position. He was arrested in 2016 on a domestic violence charge, which was later dropped in exchange for his undergoing counseling. He spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns after being picked up in the 2014 National Football League draft, but went 2-6 as their starting quarterback.

Manziel is expected to report to the Express on Sunday.
