Google releases Lookout app for visually impaired and blind on Pixel phones

Google's Lookout app says what it sees for blind users in the US

The app also has a camera view for live recognition. Well, the app is now officially available to install and explore by the users of Google's Pixel Smartphone users. Lookout also reads the text in signs and labels, scans barcodes and identifies currencies.

Since being announced at Google I/O previous year, the company has been testing, improving and enhancing Lookout, an app reminiscent of the Google Lens, until its official launch on Tuesday.

After nearly a year of testing, Google has finally launched its AI-powered Google Lookout app that is created to help visually impaired and blind by identifying the objects around them.

The app reportedly assists users in situations such as learning about a new space for the first time, reading text and documents, and completing daily routines such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping, Google said.

The app is now available to download at the Google Play Store for all Pixel devices in the US.

Google does mention that, "As with any new technology, Lookout will not always be 100 percent ideal". The app will use spoken words to alert the users on the whereabouts of the objects.

If you're in the US and own a Pixel, you can download Lookout for free, right now. As it communicates with the caller, Assistant would display a transcription of the conversation in real-time.

According to a blog entry by Google, Lookout utilizes man-made consciousness, similar to Google Lens, and gives clients a chance to hunt and make a move on items around them by just pointing the phone.

Most of what Google has been doing in the AI space for the past couple of years is aimed at making life easier for people who already have it pretty easy.

I can't imagine having to navigate today's world while visually impaired.

The feature will make presentations more accessible to audiences that are deaf or hard of hearing.
