Heartbreaking visuals of devastation: Foot overbridge collapse in Mumbai

As bridge swayed youth pushed father to safety — and then fell to his death

Five persons were killed and 29 were injured after a section of a foot overbridge outside Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus collapsed during rush hour on Thursday evening, PTI reported. Police have barricaded the place to ensure free-movement for rescue workers, whereas, the injured personnel are being rushed to the hospital. The signal was red, because of which several motorists were waiting and were saved when the overbridge collapsed. There is a severe case of negligence, if after a structural audit that has declared the bridge fit.

An eyewitness said the over-bridge was being used by pedestrians even as fix works were ongoing.

The bridge, which connected the area near the Times of India building with the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station, was commonly called "Kasab bridge" as the 26/11 Mumbai attack terrorist passed through it during the strike.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he had ordered a "high-level inquiry" into the collapse.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has clarified that the bridge was under BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). Famous cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also took to Twitter and prayed for those who were injured in the bridge collapse.

ANI reported that senior police officers and the fire brigade, as well as ambulances, were rushed to the location.

Another eyewitness said most of the victims were walking on the overbridge on their way to the CST station when it collapsed.

"A slab of the bridge had collapsed".

Probing the incident, the Mumbai police found two main factors contributing to the stampede - the rains that compelled commuters to stay put on the foot overbridge, and the constant crowd of commuters alighting from the trains adding to the crowd.

"This incident puts a question mark over the competence of engineers and structural auditors who inspected bridges in Mumbai".

"Foot over bridge connecting CST platform 1 north end with B T Lane near Times of India building has collapsed". Commuters have been asked to use alternate routes.

The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, a disaster management cell official said. It is a public FOB, and not a railway FOB.

However, it was not on the list of eight dilapidated bridges in the city, which the corporation had published a week back while stating that the bridges would be repaired soon. It allocated Rs 880 crore to construct bridges and provide amenities for commuters.

The major repairs of 223 bridges in the city began after the audit, while 176 bridges are under minor repairs.

Out of these, 47 bridges are taken on priority.
