Hero refugee chased gunman away from New Zealand mosque

Abdul Aziz who is being hailed for distracting and confronting the mosque shooter speaks in Christchurch New Zealand

Fifty people were killed on Friday and dozens more injured.

Suspect Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian, has appeared in court charged with one murder over the shootings.

Aziz then took an abandoned firearm that had no ammunition and threw it on the killer's auto after he ran to the vehicle for the second time. "When he swore at me, I knew that he's not the good guy", Aziz told Reuters in an interview.

Instead, he picked up the first thing he could find, a credit card machine, and ran outside screaming "Come here!"

The shooter ran back to his auto and got another gun. He said the gunman ran back to his vehicle to get another gun, and Aziz hurled the credit card machine at him.

This incident is one of the most gruesome public shooting in the history of New Zealand.

"When he saw me with the shotgun in my hands, he dropped the gun and ran away toward his auto".

"He went after him, and he managed to overpower him, and that's how we were saved", he said. "He just swore at me and took off".

He yelled at the congregation of more than 80 people to get down but Aziz did not hesitate to go out and confront the gunman, said Alabi.

Almost 100 Muslim worshippers who had taken cover in the mosque as the rampage unfolded were left unharmed.

But Aziz, whose four sons and dozens of others remained in the mosque while he faced off with the gunman, says he thinks it's what anyone would have done.

"I promise you I wasn't frightened or anything", Wahabzadah said, adding that he was prepared to give his life for those he loved. After the gunman ran away, Alabi returned to the mosque.

A story of true heroism is emerging from the horrific terror attacks on innocent Muslims in New Zealand.

The attacker live-streamed the attack, with footage showing him firing repeatedly at worshippers as he moves from room to room.

Aziz is from Kabul, Afghanistan, but left the war-torn country several years ago.

It comes after another hero emerged yesterday.

Naeem Rashid, 50, was seen lunging at the gunman in the livestream video from the Al Noor mosque.

Naeem Rashid, a resident of Abbottabad, died after trying to wrestle a gun from the shooter. Both were killed in the attack. The gunman couldn't get a good angle on Wahabzadah, he said, because Wahabzadah was ducking between cars and a fence.

Alabi said he heard a voice outside the mosque at about 1:55 pm local time and stopped the prayer he was leading to peak outside the window. Another shooting happened a short while later at a nearby mosque in the city.

The video showed him pulling a gun from the rear of his auto and heading into the mosque, where he fired at worshippers for about two minutes. "Otherwise, if he managed to come into the mosque, then we would all probably be gone".

He said up to 70 people were praying inside Linwood when gunshots were heard.

One told Radio New Zealand the gunman was "very calm" during the rampage. Some shots hit the mosque windows and walls. But he drove away and Aziz said he chased the auto down the street to a red light, before it made a U-turn and sped away.

"Those two police officers acted with absolute courage", Bush said.

Abdul Aziz has said he didn't like to be called a hero but for an entire nation, he is. "The ambulances start to arrive and then lots of ambulances arrived after that". "It's just comprehending what is the incomprehensible".
