IDF: Hamas Rockets Launched at Tel Aviv Likely a Mistake

Palestinians inspect a destroyed Hamas site after an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City

Israel has carried out dozens of air strikes on Palestinian militant sites in Gaza in retaliation for the firing of two rockets towards Tel Aviv. Other targets included the main underground manufacturing site of standard-grade rockets in the Gaza Strip, a military training site that served as the Hamas center of unmanned aerial aircrafts array in southern Gaza Strip, and a number of other military sites as well. Palestinian media said naval bases belonging to the ruling Hamas group had been struck.

Pompeo's interview was recorded on Thursday, before Israeli defense officials said the Gaza rockets had been fired by mistake.

Israeli news media reported on rocket sirens blasting across Tel Aviv as well as the satellite cities of Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Bat Yam, Holon, Azor and Rishon Letzion.

Hamas, which typically claims responsibility for its military actions, denied involvement in the rocket attack on Tel Aviv and even said it had undermined its interests.

It was unclear where those rockets landed, but Israel's military reported no damage or injuries.

Shortly before the rocket attack, Hamas police on Thursday violently broke up a rare protest by demonstrators angry about the dire living conditions in Gaza.

But Israel's military said they were launched by Hamas, and Israel in any case always holds Hamas responsible for violence from Gaza.

Not only is Egypt in the midst of another effort to achieve a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but Israel is just weeks away from a general election.

Hamas forces armed with guns and clubs attacked today hundreds of Palestinians protesting in Gaza City against the high prices of goods and taxes imposed by the de facto government in the Gaza Strip.

"In keeping with the public interest, the commission has chose to exceptionally postpone its activities scheduled for this day", the body which organizes the protests said in a statement.

"The Hamas terrorist organization bears responsibility for everything that is happening in and out of the Gaza Strip", Israel said in a statement. Four people were wounded, health ministry officials said.

It's a first since Israel's 2014 campaign in Gaza.

The call came hours after the protest was cancelled for the first time in almost a year after Israeli jets hit the enclave on Thursday evening, following the launching of rockets at Tel Aviv.

It is possible that the political echelon felt they could not ignore the launch against Israel's most dense population area, regardless of the enemy's intent.

Cabinet Minister Naftali Bennett, a hard-line rival of Netanyahu's, called on the prime minister to convene a gathering of his Security Cabinet and demand the army "present a plan to defeat Hamas".
